The history of KWASUED

The Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED) was established in 2024 under the administration of Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the Executive Governor of Kwara State. The aim of the university is to produce competent and innovative educators to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

The establishment of KWASUED builds on a long tradition of prioritizing teacher education in Kwara State. This commitment stems from the understanding that high-quality teacher education is crucial for sustainable human capital development. Here are some key historical milestones:

1974

A School of Education was established under the Kwara State College of Technology (now Kwara State Polytechnic).

1976

The School of Education became independent and was transformed into the first state-owned College of Education in Nigeria.

1978-1991

Kwara State founded two more Colleges of Education, solidifying its position as one of the states with the highest number of state-owned teacher education institutions in Nigeria.

2009

A Faculty of Education was established at Kwara State University, Malete.

November 17, 2023

Governor Abdulrazaq appointed an 11-member committee chaired by Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem (OFR) to oversee the establishment of KWASUED.

The creation of KWASUED marks a significant step forward in Kwara State’s commitment to producing highly qualified educators and addressing the teacher shortage in the region.

with the Departments of Life Sciences Education and Physical Sciences Education.

Faculty of Humanities Education

with the Departments of Language Education, Social Sciences Education, and Arts Education.

Faculty of Vocational & Technology Teacher Education

with the Departments of Technical Education, Home Economics, and Vocational Education.

Faculty of Educational Sciences and Leadership

with the Departments of Educational Psychology, Philosophy, Curriculum and Instruction, Sociology, and Leadership Education.

The Institute of Teacher Professional Development, which offers professional development programs for teachers, and a School of Postgraduate Studies are also available.
